Investment and Expansion

Evonik is expanding its SEPURAN® hollow fiber membrane production in Schörfling and Lenzing, Austria, with a mid-double-digit million euro investment. A new hollow fiber spinning facility in Schörfling began operations earlier this year, and construction of an additional production line is set to start in early 2024, with completion planned for the first half of 2025.

Strategic Growth

This expansion aligns with Evonik's strategy to invest in innovative green technologies. By 2030, the company aims to increase the proportion of revenue from Next Generation Solutions, which offer superior sustainability benefits, to more than 50% from the current 43%.

Technological Contributions

Evonik's SEPURAN® membranes are crucial for biogas treatment and hydrogen extraction, contributing to the defossilization of the energy industry. The membranes are made of a high-performance polymer developed by Evonik, resistant to pressure and temperature. The expansion includes a new plant for spinning hollow fibers and additional infrastructure for producing membrane modules at Schörfling, while Lenzing will increase production of the required high-performance plastic.

Job Creation and Sustainability

The expansion will create around 50 new jobs in Lenzing and Schörfling. Evonik's Schörfling production site is powered entirely by renewable energy, reducing CO2 emissions by around 5,000 metric tons annually. The company also covers its gas requirements with biomethane from regional production.

Market Leadership

Since launching SEPURAN® membranes in 2011, Evonik has become a global leader in efficient gas separation technology, supplying membranes to over 1,000 biogas plants worldwide. SEPURAN® membranes efficiently separate gases such as methane, nitrogen, and hydrogen, offering precise gas separation and higher productivity.
