Expansion Project

Evonik is expanding its POLYVEST® HT plant in Marl, Germany. The Coating & Adhesive Resins business line expects the additional production capacity for hydroxyl-terminated polybutadienes (HTPB) to be operational by the second quarter of 2024. This expansion follows a double-digit million-euro investment.

Strategic Importance

The expansion aims to enhance service reliability for global customers and strengthen Evonik's position in a competitive market. The project comes ten years after the initial start of production at the HTPB plant in Marl.

Production and Supply Chain

Evonik's production is backward-integrated, with butadiene produced directly at the Marl site and hydrogen peroxide supplied by the Evonik Group. This integration ensures supply security for the raw materials needed for POLYVEST® production. Additionally, the Marl site houses Evonik’s Application Technology and Research & Development teams, providing a seamless link from laboratory development to production.

Product Applications

POLYVEST® HT is a liquid, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene produced by free-radical polymerization. It features a hydrophobic polybutadiene backbone and primary hydroxyl groups suitable for precise chemical modification. The product is used as a polyol component in various adhesive and sealant applications, with a specific variant, POLYVEST® HT-A, intended for aerospace applications.
