Investment and Construction

Evonik has commenced the construction of the world's first commercial rhamnolipid production facility in Slovenská Ľupča, Slovakia. This new biosurfactant plant represents a triple-digit million-euro investment, reinforcing the site as a strategic biotechnology hub.

Sustainable Production

Rhamnolipids, essential for cleaning and personal care products, are 100% bio-based and biodegradable. The new facility will expand Evonik’s biotechnology platform, which is integral to the company's Nutrition & Care division. These biosurfactants are produced using European corn sugar, eliminating the need for petrochemical feedstocks or tropical oils.

Strategic Goals

The Nutrition & Care division aims to increase its share of system solutions from 20% to over 50% by 2030. The division focuses on sustainability, driving portfolio transformation and innovation. Rhamnolipids play a crucial role in this transition, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional surfactants.

Technological Advancements

Evonik Fermas, located in Slovenská Ľupča, has a history of biotechnology innovation. Founded in 1992, the site initially produced amino acids for animal feed and has since expanded to manufacture a range of fermentation-based products. In 2016, Evonik Fermas launched its first pilot plant for sustainable biosurfactants production.

Market Applications

Rhamnolipids are suitable for household cleaners, personal care products like shampoos and micellar waters, and oral care products such as toothpaste. Their exceptional foam-forming properties and pleasant taste make them versatile for various applications.
