Petroliam Nasional Berhad, commonly referred to as PETRONAS, is the national oil and gas company of Malaysia. Established on 1 August 1974, it was created to manage the country's petroleum resources and is wholly owned by the Malaysian government through the Ministry of Finance.
The primary activities of PETRONAS encompass the full spectrum of the oil and gas industry. This includes exploration and production in upstream operations, both onshore and offshore in Malaysia and internationally. In the downstream sector, the company operates refineries, produces a range of petrochemical products, and engages in the marketing and distribution of petroleum products and chemicals.
PETRONAS has a presence in numerous countries worldwide, with significant investments in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It is actively involved in the chemical industry through its petrochemical plants and has been expanding into areas such as renewable energy and battery manufacturing technologies as part of its strategic diversification.
As a major player in the global energy market, PETRONAS ranks among the largest oil companies by revenue and production capacity. Its integrated business model allows it to maintain a strong position in the competitive landscape of the petroleum and chemical sectors.
