Vynova to Invest in New Alcoholate Plant in Germany

At a glance
  • Investment is a high double-digit million euro amount.
  • Current facilities must close by end of 2027 due to UN Minamata Convention.
  • Alcoholates are primarily used in biodiesel production.
  • Existing sodium methylate plant in France has 20,000 tonnes capacity.

Investment and Site Details

Vynova Group, part of the International Chemical Investors Group (ICIG), is set to invest a substantial amount in the construction of a new plant complex at the Lülsdorf site in Germany. This investment, described as a high double-digit million euro amount, aims to produce sodium and potassium alcoholates.

Regulatory Compliance and Production Shift

The Lülsdorf site, acquired from Evonik earlier this year, currently produces alcoholates exclusively for Evonik through Lülsdorf Functional Solutions GmbH (LFS). Due to the UN Minamata Convention on Mercury, existing LFS alcoholate production facilities must close by the end of 2027. The new plant will ensure compliance with these regulations and maintain supply continuity.

Applications and Market Impact

Alcoholates, also known as alkoxides, are crucial in various applications, particularly in biodiesel production. The planned investment will secure a steady supply for the European market, leveraging local production capabilities.

Existing Production Capacity

Vynova Group already operates a smaller sodium methylate production plant at its subsidiary MSSA in La Rochelle, France, with an annual capacity of 20,000 tonnes. This existing facility complements the new investment, enhancing Vynova's production capabilities in Europe.
