- Versalis acquires Ecoplastic's technology and plants for mechanical recycling.
- The new hub at Porto Marghera will start operations next year.
- The first phase will have a capacity of 20,000 tons per year.
- Recycled products include rEPS and rGPPS from polystyrene waste.
Acquisition Details
Versalis, Eni’s chemical company, has acquired the technology and plants of Ecoplastic, a De Berg group company specializing in the recycling of styrenic polymers. This acquisition is exclusive and aims to enhance Versalis' capabilities in advanced mechanical recycling.
Technological Advancements
Ecoplastic has developed a process to produce styrenic polymers, including expanded polystyrene (rEPS) and solid polystyrene (rGPPS), with up to 100% recycled content. These materials are sourced from industrial and commercial polystyrene waste.
Applications and Sustainability
The recycled products will be used in applications where sustainability and circularity are crucial, such as packaging and construction. This aligns with broader industry trends towards more sustainable practices.
Porto Marghera Recycling Hub
The agreement marks the beginning of the first phase of constructing an advanced mechanical recycling hub at the Porto Marghera plant. The installation of the acquired units will commence next year, with an initial capacity of around 20,000 tons per year.
