Investment Overview
Solvay is set to invest €185 million over the next three years to expand its production capacities. This investment will be split between increasing soda ash production at its Green River site in Wyoming, USA, and expanding sodium bicarbonate production at its Devnya plant in Bulgaria.
Soda Ash Expansion
The Green River facility in Wyoming will see a 600 kilotonnes increase in soda ash production capacity. This expansion leverages existing infrastructure and aims to meet the growing global demand, particularly in markets such as South East Asia, Brazil, the Middle East, and Africa. Production is expected to ramp up by the end of 2021.
Bicarbonate Production Increase
In Bulgaria, the Devnya plant will expand its sodium bicarbonate capacity by 200 kilotonnes. This expansion is part of a joint operation with Sisecam and is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2020. The new production line will produce SOLVAIR® sorbents for flue gas treatments and Bicar®Z for animal nutrition.
Market Demand
Global demand for soda ash is projected to grow by 10 million tons, excluding China, between 2018 and 2030, with 4 million tons of this growth expected by 2023. The demand is driven by applications in detergents, glass manufacturing, and lithium extraction.
