Investment and Expansion

Solvay is investing €6 million to expand its sodium bicarbonate production capacity at its Rheinberg site in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The expansion is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018.

Product and Environmental Impact

The increased capacity will enable the production of SOLVAir® SB 0/3, a ready-to-use solution designed to reduce pollutant atmospheric emissions in various industries. This product helps industries comply with stringent environmental regulations by eliminating acid gases such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sulfur oxides (SOx) efficiently and sustainably.

Strategic Importance

The Rheinberg expansion complements Solvay's existing capacity in Torrelavega, Spain, creating a new platform for growth in the flue gas treatment market. Industries such as waste-to-energy plants, power plants, industrial boilers, and the glass, cement, and steel sectors will benefit from a reliable and secure supply source.

Sustainability and Funding

The new capacity will feature reduced energy consumption, aligning with Solvay’s commitment to decreasing its CO2 intensity. The project is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
