New Recycling Facility in Toledo
Plastipak has announced a significant investment in a new recycling facility at its Toledo, Spain site. This facility will convert PET flake into food-grade recycled PET (rPET) pellets, which can be used directly in new preforms, bottles, and containers.
Production and Capacity
The new plant will be co-located with the existing preform and container manufacturing plant, eliminating the need for resin transport and thus saving carbon emissions. The facility is expected to produce 20,000 tonnes of food-grade rPET pellets annually and will begin production in the summer of 2022.
Job Creation and Expansion
The project will create approximately 14 new jobs and will include additional manufacturing and warehouse space to support the increased production capacity.
Regulatory Compliance and Sustainability
This investment supports compliance with the Single Use Plastics Directive, which mandates minimum levels of recycled content. It will also help brand owners reduce their financial obligations under the planned Spanish plastics tax.
Global and European Presence
This will be Plastipak’s fifth global location producing rPET, reinforcing its position as the largest producer of bottle-grade recycled PET in Europe. The company already operates three rPET facilities in Europe (France, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom) and a HDPE and PET recycling plant in the US, producing over 130,000 tonnes of recycled PET annually in Europe.
