OMV secures €450m EIB loan for 140 MW green hydrogen plant
- The European Investment Bank granted a €450 million loan to support OMV’s green hydrogen plant.
- Total project cost is €600 million for a 140 MW facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria.
- The plant is under construction and scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2027.
- Using renewable power it will produce up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year and is estimated to reduce ~150,000 tonnes of CO2 annually (≈10% of Schwechat refinery’s direct emissions).
Financing
The European Investment Bank has granted a €450 million loan to support OMV’s 140 MW green hydrogen production plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria.
Project details and capacity
The total investment is €600 million. The facility is under construction and scheduled to commence operations by the end of 2027. Using renewable energy, OMV expects the plant to produce up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
Refinery impact and emissions
The green hydrogen will be used to decarbonise OMV’s Schwechat refinery and to enhance sustainability of its fuel and chemical products. OMV estimates an annual CO2 reduction of approximately 150,000 tonnes, equal to about 10% of the refinery’s current direct emissions.
Strategic context
OMV describes the plant as one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen facilities and Austria’s largest of its kind. The project fits OMV Strategy 2030, which targets around 900 kilotons of renewable fuels and sustainable chemical feedstock capacity by 2030 and supports the company’s net‑zero by 2050 ambition alongside other hydrogen and SAF/HVO projects in Austria and Romania.
