Project Overview

OMV is constructing a 140 MW green hydrogen plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria, with operations set to begin by the end of 2027. This facility will be among the largest in Europe, producing up to 23,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.

Environmental Impact

The plant aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions, with an estimated annual savings of up to 150,000 tons. This reduction will contribute to the decarbonization efforts of the Schwechat refinery.

Investment and Funding

OMV is investing a sum in the mid-hundreds of millions of euros in the project. The Austrian government, through Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (aws), has signed a funding agreement to provide up to EUR 123 million, following a positive assessment by the European Hydrogen Bank.

Joint Venture

In November 2025, OMV and Masdar, a global clean energy company, signed an agreement to form a joint venture. This partnership will focus on the financing, construction, and operation of the 140 MW electrolyzer plant. The joint venture is expected to be finalized in early 2026, pending shareholder agreement and regulatory approval.
