Investment and Partnership
Norwegian has partnered with Norsk e-Fuel to build the world’s first full-scale e-fuel plant in Mosjøen, Norway. Norwegian will invest over NOK 50 million for a minority equity stake in the company. This strategic partnership aims to secure long-term offtake of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and accelerate the production and availability of SAF.
Production Timeline
The goal is to start producing e-fuels in Mosjøen by 2026. The plant is expected to meet approximately 20% of Norwegian’s total SAF demand until 2030. This initiative is part of Norwegian’s broader strategy to achieve a 45% reduction in emissions by 2030 and contribute to the European aviation industry’s goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
Technological and Environmental Impact
The e-fuel plant will use 100% renewable energy, water, and recycled biogenic CO2, as well as CO2 from direct air capture, to produce sustainable fuels. The final product is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 99% compared to fossil fuels, according to the EU ETS InnovFund scheme and audited by DNV.
Competitive Advantages
Located in Northern Norway, Mosjøen offers some of the lowest electricity prices in Europe and stable access to renewable energy from hydropower. The area also has a port and rail infrastructure and a long-standing processing industry tradition, providing a competitive advantage for the production of e-fuels.
