North Sea Pipelines NOGAT and NGT Certified for Green Hydrogen Transport

At a glance
  • The Certificate of Fitness for green hydrogen transport was issued by Bureau Veritas in accordance with NEN3656.
  • The NGT pipeline can transport up to 100% pure green hydrogen with a capacity of 12-14 gigawatts.
  • NOGAT pipeline can transport a mix of natural gas and green hydrogen, reducing environmental impact.
  • The Certificate of Appropriateness is valid until 2062.

Certification Achievement

Noordgastransport (NGT) and NOGAT have become the first pipeline owners to receive the Certificate of Fitness for transporting green hydrogen through their existing North Sea pipelines. The certification was issued by Bureau Veritas Inspection & Certification, following a survey conducted in accordance with NEN3656.

NGT Pipeline Capabilities

Ron Hagen, director of NGT, highlighted that their pipeline, which runs from the UK border to Uithuizen, is now certified to transport up to 100% pure green hydrogen. The pipeline's capacity of approximately 12-14 gigawatts will facilitate a faster transition to large-scale green hydrogen production in the North Sea.

NOGAT Pipeline Benefits

Hans Janssen, director at NOGAT, emphasized the advantages of using existing infrastructure for the energy transition. The NOGAT pipeline, running from Scandinavian, Danish, and German waters to Den Helder, can transport both pure hydrogen and a mix of natural gas and green hydrogen. This approach is not only faster and cheaper but also minimizes environmental impact by avoiding new landfall constructions through vulnerable coastal areas.

Inspection and Safety

In 2018, DNV assessed the robustness of the pipelines' steel, confirming its suitability and safety for hydrogen transportation. The pipelines undergo regular internal and external inspections to ensure their integrity, with major inspections conducted every five years. The State Supervision of Mines oversees these activities. The Certificate of Appropriateness is valid until 2062.
