Moeve and Emerita Resources to supply 100% HVO to Iberian Belt West mine
- 100% renewable HVO will be used in construction, operations and concentrate transport at the Iberian Belt West (IBW) project in Huelva.
- Use of the biofuel is estimated to avoid approximately 2,600 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of 170,000 trees.
- Moeve’s 2G HVO can reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by up to 90% versus conventional diesel and is compatible with existing engines.
- Moeve and partner Apical are building a 2G biofuel complex in Huelva: €1.2 billion cumulative investment and 500,000 t/year flexible capacity for HVO and SAF, with a 2.5 Mt/year Iberian market target by 2030.
Deal and deployment
Moeve and Emerita Resources have signed Spain’s first industrial-scale agreement to deploy 100% renewable diesel (HVO) in the mining sector. The fuel, produced at Moeve’s Palos de la Frontera facility, will be used at the Iberian Belt West (IBW) project in Huelva for heavy machinery during construction and operations and for heavy-duty transport of mineral concentrates.
Emissions and performance
The 2G HVO supplied under the agreement can deliver up to 90% lifecycle CO2 reductions versus traditional diesel and is compatible with current engines. Its use in IBW’s transport and construction activities is estimated to prevent roughly 2,600 metric tons of CO2 annually—an amount the article equates to the annual carbon absorption of 170,000 trees—and would allow a truck to travel about three million kilometres.
Local industrial ecosystem and capacity build-out
The deal strengthens a local value chain by colocating renewable fuel production, mining operations and export logistics in Huelva. Moeve, with partner Apical, is advancing construction of a new 2G biofuel plant that will form part of the largest second-generation biofuel complex in southern Europe, backed by a €1.2 billion cumulative investment and a flexible combined HVO/SAF capacity of 500,000 t/year, supporting a company target of 2.5 million t/year in the Iberian market by 2030.
