New Distillation Plant
BASF’s biotech company Isobionics® is advancing its production capabilities at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen. Acquired by BASF in 2019, Isobionics will now handle its own distillation and develop new flavors and fragrances. A new distillation plant will be constructed to facilitate this.
Subsidy and Support
Isobionics has received a subsidy from the Province of Limburg to support this development. Commissioner Ruud Burlet highlighted the significance of this expansion, noting that it demonstrates the potential for companies to grow at Brightlands Chemelot Campus and strengthens the local ecosystem with innovative biobased products.
Construction Timeline
The official go-ahead for the plant's construction was given on June 2 by Toine Janssen, CEO of Isobionics, Ruud Burlet, and Bert Kip, CEO of Brightlands Chemelot Campus. The goal is to commence production by the end of November.
Innovative Production
Isobionics is known for its unique approach to producing natural fragrances and flavors through an innovative fermentation process. One of its key products, valencene, is used in various applications, including soft drinks, and offers consistent high quality independent of weather and harvest conditions.
Future Developments
With the new plant, Isobionics will scale up its distillation processes from laboratory to industrial scale. The company also plans to develop up to six new aroma ingredients this year, expanding its product portfolio beyond valencene.
