Investment and Location
This March, the partners of CO2 Betriebs-GmbH & Co. KG broke ground for a new carbon dioxide production plant at Industriepark Höchst. The joint venture, established in October 2012, is investing €5 million in the facility, which is set to come online this fall. The plant is being constructed on a 1,300 m² lot in Zone E 4 on the northern Main River side of the park.
Recycling and Environmental Impact
The new facility will recycle carbon dioxide (CO2) generated by Celanese Chemicals Europe GmbH as a byproduct of vinyl acetate production. The plant will recycle up to 3.4 tons of CO2 per hour, amounting to roughly 28,000 tons annually. This initiative significantly reduces CO2 emissions and transforms waste into a valuable commodity.
Applications and Quality
Recycled CO2 has numerous applications, including water treatment, welding as a shielding gas, and in the food industry as a sparkling beverage additive or protective atmosphere for packages. The facility achieves CO2 purities as high as 99.999 volume percent, meeting the stringent requirements of Coca-Cola and the International Society of Beverage Technologists (ISBT). An on-site analyzer ensures immediate testing of gas quality.
