Expansion Plans
Celanese Corporation has announced plans to expand its GUR® ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) production capacity in Europe. This follows a recent expansion in Bishop, Texas, which will add approximately 15KT per year starting in 2022. The European expansion is expected to be operational by 2024, with an annual nameplate capacity of around 34KT. The company is currently selecting a site, considering both existing and greenfield locations.
Market Demand
The new facility will support the growing demand for GUR® in the electric vehicle (EV) market, particularly for Lithium Ion Battery Separators (LIBS). The EV market is projected to grow at a compounded annual rate of over 25% through 2025, driving strong demand for Celanese's GUR®. Additionally, the facility will have the capability to produce medical grade GUR®.
Strategic Positioning
Celanese aims to meet the increasing demand for UHMW-PE in Europe, which is expected to outperform demand in Asia. The company’s recent expansions in Texas and Nanjing, China, position it as the only truly global producer of UHMW-PE, enabling close collaboration with customers worldwide.
Financial Details
Financial specifics of the European expansion have not been disclosed. Further project details will be announced as developments progress.
