€24 Million Biorefinery Investment at ZILS

At a glance
  • €24 million will be invested in the new biorefinery at ZILS.
  • The facility will produce S-50 biofuel using crude glycerin.
  • Production capacity is 30,000 metric tons annually.
  • Over 70% of output will be exported to European markets.

Investment and Location

InKemia is investing €24 million in a new biorefinery at the Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone (ZILS) in Portugal. This facility will be the first in the world to produce and market the S-50 biofuel.

Biofuel Development

S-50, developed by InKemia, is a new biofuel with characteristics similar to diesel and biodiesel. One of its main raw materials is crude glycerin. The biofuel has been developed entirely within the European Union and has undergone extensive testing in both laboratory settings and engines.

Economic Impact

The biorefinery will generate 23 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs and create an additional 15 to 20 indirect jobs. The project is expected to positively impact Portuguese exports, with over 70% of its annual 30,000 metric tons production destined for markets in Spain, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.

Facility Details

The industrial facility will occupy approximately one hectare of Lot E, Zone 1 of ZILS, a petrochemical industrial site managed by aicep Portugal Global. More information about the site can be found at ZILS Global Parques.
