Bilfinger to Build Industry 4.0 Testing Facility

At a glance
  • Bilfinger will install and operate a testing facility in Frankfurt for IGR e.V.
  • The facility will test Industry 4.0 applications under real conditions.
  • The first goal, integrating measuring equipment via WirelessHART, has been achieved.
  • The process testing facility is expected to be operational by summer.

Introduction

Realistic test conditions are essential for developing Industry 4.0 applications in the process industry. Developers often lack access to crucial process data, a gap that the new testing facility in Frankfurt aims to fill.

Project Overview

Bilfinger will install and operate the facility for Interessengemeinschaft Regelwerke Technik (IGR) e.V. The project leverages Bilfinger's 20 years of experience in setting up testing facilities for fieldbus systems, aiming to advance the digitalization of the process industry.

Testing Capabilities

The facility will provide process and diagnostic data for all operating and fault conditions, enabling the development of innovative processes. Industry 4.0 applications will be tested under real conditions, generating data for cloud applications.

Facility Design

The facility will verify hardware and software designs for recording measurements and assess Internet security concepts for data transmission to the cloud. Participating companies can use the facility without complex approval processes.

Components

The facility includes two automated containers, measuring equipment for data transfer, Internet connectivity via a leased line, various firewalls, and cloud-based systems. The testing aims to produce standardized concepts for consistency and IT security.

Progress and Goals

The first goal, integrating measuring equipment via WirelessHART, has been achieved. The second goal, operating the process testing facility, is expected to be reached by summer, providing a platform for digitalization components and software tool development.
