Enhancing Efficiency at Total Antwerp

At a glance
  • Starting in 2016, the Antwerp platform will be equipped with new units.
  • The site will adapt to declining heavy oil demand and rising diesel use.
  • Off-gas will be recovered and used as feedstock in petrochemical units.
  • Naphtha will be partially replaced by recovered gases.

Modernization Plan

To meet evolving energy needs, an ambitious modernization plan has been rolled out at Antwerp, the largest refining and petrochemicals platform in Europe. The goal is to enhance competitiveness and efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

Adapting to Market Changes

The European market is rapidly changing with declining demand for heavy oil, rising popularity of diesel, and stricter sulfur regulations. In response, starting in 2016, the Antwerp platform will be equipped with new units to meet these evolving needs.

Resource Sharing

Plans include improving industrial and environmental performance by facilitating resource sharing among the platform’s three sites. This aims to reduce the environmental impact while making the Antwerp platform one of the most competitive facilities.

Energy Efficiency

Currently, off-gas from oil refining is used as fuel in refinery furnaces. Soon, it will be recovered and used as feedstock in petrochemical units, partially replacing naphtha, an increasingly expensive petroleum-based product.
