Investment and Upgrade
Total has completed a significant upgrade of its Antwerp integrated refining and petrochemicals platform, investing over €1 billion since the program began in 2013. This upgrade aims to enhance the site's competitiveness in Europe's main markets.
Key Projects
The upgrade includes two major projects. First, a new refining complex was built to convert heavy fuel oil into low-sulfur light products, featuring a deasphalting unit and a hydrocracker. This will reduce high-sulfur heavy fuel oil yield in anticipation of the 2020 marine fuel regulation.
Enhanced Flexibility
Second, the steam cracker's flexibility was increased to process low-cost advantaged feedstock. A new unit was constructed to convert rich gases from the refinery into cracker feedstock, and one of the two steam crackers was adapted to import and process ethane.
Logistics Project
Additionally, a logistics project was announced to connect the platform to a neighboring storage terminal via a new pipeline, expanding the terminal's capacities to maximize product value.
Production Capacity
The Antwerp facility, located in the city's port area, processes 338,000 barrels of oil per day and 1.1 million tons of ethylene per year. It produces various petroleum products, including gasoline, LPG, diesel, heavy fuel oil, and jet fuel, as well as base chemicals like olefins, C4 fractions, and aromatic hydrocarbons.
