Investment and Development

SGL Group has inaugurated a new production line for precursor at its FISIPE site in Lavradio, Portugal. This polymer-based fiber is essential for producing carbon fibers. The project involved converting and enhancing parts of the existing facility, with a total investment of 30 million euros over four years, including the spinning line.

Production and Application

The precursor production began in September and is integrated into SGL Group's global network. The precursor from Portugal will be used to produce high-end industrial SIGRAFIL carbon fibers in Moses Lake, Washington State, USA, and Muir of Ord, Scotland. These carbon fibers will serve various applications in the automotive, aerospace, and other industries.

Value Chain Completion

With the new precursor line, SGL Group now has a complete in-house value chain for high-quality carbon fiber materials. This development supports customers in creating innovative lightweight solutions. Additionally, SGL Group is enhancing its activities to offer not only materials but also expertise and support to optimize the use of fibers and materials for composites.

Future Growth

The precursor production is part of SGL Group's strategy for sustainable profitable growth, aiming for a 50 percent sales increase by 2020 in composites and graphite materials and systems. The company will focus on developments related to mobility, energy, and digitalization.
