Investment and Expansion
Evonik Industries has expanded its C4-based product capacities by investing a three-digit million Euro amount in new production plants in Antwerp, Belgium, and the Marl Chemical Park in Germany. These expansions were completed on time and are now operational.
Increased Capacities
The new plants boost production capacities for butadiene in Antwerp, and for the plasticizer alcohol Isononanol (INA) and the antiknock agent MTBE in both Marl and Antwerp. Market analyses indicate that global demand for these products is increasing by 2-5% annually.
Technological Advancements
Evonik has secured long-term supply contracts to ensure a sustainable raw material supply for the new plants. The company has also made FCC-C4 material flows from refineries usable for the first time, showcasing its technological leadership in C4 chemistry.
Product Applications
Butadiene is primarily used in synthetic rubbers for manufacturing tires and has various applications in elastomers and plastics. MTBE (Methyl-tert-butylether) is an antiknock agent that increases the octane number of fuels, improving combustion and air quality. Isononanol (INA) is used as an alcohol component in PVC plasticizers, offering excellent properties in both plastisol and thermoplastic processing.
