Project Overview
As part of its Refining and Marketing strategy, OMV has expanded its butadiene plant at the Schwechat refinery, which began operations on May 2, 2014. This expansion aligns with OMV's focus on increasing petrochemical production at its refinery sites.
Investment and Capacity
The upgrade, which started in September 2013 and was completed on April 26, 2014, involved an investment of nearly EUR 30 million. The expansion has increased the plant's butadiene capacity by 30%, allowing it to produce 60,000 tons annually.
Parallel Developments
In addition to the Schwechat expansion, OMV is constructing a new butadiene facility at its Burghausen refinery in Germany. This new facility is expected to commence operations in the second quarter of 2015.
Operational Details
The Schwechat plant upgrade utilized state-of-the-art technologies and was completed without increasing the number of employees. During the six-week standstill period, up to 90 people were employed, and as many as 300 people worked daily during the upgrade phase.
