Acquisition Details
OCI N.V. announced the acquisition of BioMCN, a methanol producer and bio-methanol pioneer based in the Netherlands, for EUR 15 million. BioMCN’s glycerin activities are excluded from the transaction and will continue under Dutch Glycerin Refinery B.V.
BioMCN's Assets
BioMCN is one of Europe’s largest methanol producers, owning two methanol plants in the Netherlands. One plant is operational with a production capacity of 440 ktpa, while the other is mothballed with a capacity of 430 ktpa. The site is located at the Chemical Park Delfzijl, connected to the national natural gas grid, and has logistical access to major European markets via road, rail, barge, and sea freight.
Market Context
The acquisition provides OCI with a foothold in the European methanol market. Western Europe consumes over 7 million tons of methanol annually, with approximately 30% used in transportation fuel applications. Europe imports more than 5 million tons of methanol, a deficit expected to grow.
OCI's Methanol Production
OCI currently produces methanol in the United States at OCI Beaumont in Texas, with a production capacity of 913 ktpa. An additional 1.75 mtpa of capacity will be added at Natgasoline, a new greenfield methanol plant under construction adjacent to OCI Beaumont.
