Investment and Construction
Huntsman has completed a 38 million Euro iron sulfate plant at its titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment manufacturing facility in Scarlino, Italy. Construction began in March 2013, and the plant is expected to be fully operational by Q3 2014.
Production Capabilities
The new plant enables the use of a wider range of feedstock to produce TIOXIDE® and ALTIRIS® pigments. It also reduces the generation of gypsum and converts spent acid from TiO2 pigment manufacturing into valuable iron sulfate products for the water treatment, animal feed, and cement markets.
Energy Efficiency
A state-of-the-art heat and power co-generation facility, built by EDF Fenice, an energy services subsidiary of EDF Group, has been added to provide electricity to the entire site. This new facility is expected to reduce the carbon intensity of the site by around 30%.
Local Impact
The project has created 15 new jobs at the Scarlino site and approximately 30% of the investment has been spent with local contractors. The development has been supported by local and regional authorities, including the Province and Municipality.
Safety and Collaboration
The project was delivered in collaboration with Jacobs, involving up to 150 contractors working on site daily. The construction phase reported no injuries or first aid incidents, attributed to Huntsman’s Zero Harm safety program.
