Introduction
On January 23rd, the EU launched the LOCIMAP project to enhance the competitive growth of Europe’s low carbon industrial base. This initiative addresses the challenges faced by European manufacturing businesses competing against regions with access to low-cost energy.
Project Goals
LOCIMAP aims to integrate manufacturing complexes for increased efficiency in energy and material use, and lower emissions. The project will identify practical paths for Europe to grow a revitalized low carbon industrial base.
Challenges and Opportunities
European industrial parks, originally developed to utilize local resources, now face rising costs and regulatory pressures. LOCIMAP seeks new business models to ensure these parks continue contributing economically and attract new investment. The products from these parks are essential for developing a low carbon economy in Europe.
Future Models
Over the next 10-20 years, LOCIMAP will develop new approaches and models for integrated industrial parks. These models will be invaluable to EU policymakers as they address global challenges.
Learning from Kalundborg
Participating industrial parks will benefit from understanding how to improve their operations, inspired by Kalundborg in Denmark, where business economics have driven the development of a sustainable and low carbon industrial system. The local community also benefits from accessing heat and power generated by industrial activities.
Public Engagement
With growing environmental awareness among European citizens, LOCIMAP will keep the public informed through a dedicated section on its website, www.locimap.eu. The project will also ensure the industry understands the opportunities identified.
Consortium and Contact
The 14-member consortium will promote the opportunities for Europe’s industrial parks over the next two years. For further information, contact Mark Lewis, LOCIMAP Project Coordinator at NEPIC.
