Investment and Expansion

Specialty chemicals group LANXESS is addressing the rising global demand for iron oxide pigments by launching a significant investment program. In 2023, the company plans to invest around EUR 20 million to expand its production capacities across its sites in Brazil, Germany, and China. Currently, LANXESS has global synthesis capacities exceeding 350,000 metric tons annually for Bayferrox products.

Record Production in Germany

In May, LANXESS achieved a record monthly production of 25,000 metric tons of Bayferrox at its Krefeld-Uerdingen site in Germany, the highest volume since the site began operations in 1926. Approximately 85 percent of this production was designated for export. From January to May 2010, the production volume at Krefeld-Uerdingen surpassed the same period in the previous year by more than a third. The facility, with an annual production volume of 280,000 metric tons, is the largest of its kind globally and is currently operating at full capacity.

Global Production Capacities

The Jinshan plant in China, which opened in 2007, can now operate at its full capacity of 28,000 metric tons of iron oxide yellow pigment annually, making it the largest production facility of its kind in Asia. In Brazil, LANXESS' pigment production is based in Porto Feliz, with an annual capacity of 36,000 metric tons.

Applications

The iron and chrome oxide pigments produced by LANXESS are utilized in various applications, including coloring concrete parts, roofing tiles, paints and coatings, plastics, paper, and special pigments for toners and other uses.
