Facility Overview
Bayer MaterialScience has inaugurated a new pilot facility for manufacturing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at CHEMPARK Leverkusen. The facility, which cost EUR 22 million to develop and construct, is the largest of its kind globally, with an annual production capacity of 200 metric tons.
Market Potential
By investing in this key technology, Bayer aims to meet the growing demand for multi-wall carbon nanotubes, marketed under the trade name Baytubes®. Forecasts predict a 25% annual growth rate for CNTs, with the market expected to reach US$ 2 billion within ten years. Additionally, nanotechnology is anticipated to create 100,000 new jobs in the German industry in the medium term.
Strategic Location
North Rhine-Westphalia is a leading hub for nanotechnology. The new facility underscores Bayer's commitment to Leverkusen and the region, which boasts excellent infrastructure, easy access to raw materials and power supplies, advanced waste management technology, and a highly qualified workforce.
Production Capabilities
Bayer is among the few companies capable of producing high-quality CNTs on an industrial scale. Since 2007, it has operated a pilot facility in Laufenburg, Baden-Württemberg, with a 60 metric ton annual capacity. CNTs are produced from ethylene in a reactor at elevated temperatures using a catalytic process.
Applications
Baytubes® can be added to polymer matrices or metal systems to enhance mechanical strength and electrical properties. Applications include thermoplastic and thermoset systems, coatings, rotor blades for wind turbines, and sports equipment. In ship coatings, Baytubes® improve abrasion resistance and reduce fuel consumption by lowering flow resistance.
Future Prospects
Nanotechnology has potential applications across various industries, from industrial production to energy supply, IT, intelligent surfaces, and even medicine. Bayer is also committed to the safe usage of Baytubes® through a comprehensive product stewardship program.
