New Production Plant
BASF will start up a new plant for the production of its biodegradable plastic Ecoflex® at its Schwarzheide site in Germany in early 2006. This new facility will nearly double the production capacity for Ecoflex®, adding 6,000 metric tons per year to the existing 8,000 metric ton plant in Ludwigshafen.
Market Dynamics
The global market for biodegradable materials is growing rapidly. BASF aims to capitalize on this growth and ensure a steady supply of Ecoflex® for its customers. The recent amendment to the German packaging ordinance is expected to boost domestic market activity.
Ecoflex® Applications
Ecoflex® is a biodegradable copolyester primarily used in blend formulations. These blends combine renewable raw materials like starch, cellulose, or polylactic acid with Ecoflex®, a biodegradable synthetic polymer. Key applications include shopping bags, organic garbage bags, mulching film for agriculture, and various types of food packaging.
