Linde and Nynas Sign Hydrogen Supply Contract

At a glance
  • Linde will invest around EUR 30 million in a steam methane reformer plant.
  • The plant will be operational by Q4 2015.
  • The facility will produce 400,000 m³ of hydrogen per day.
  • Nynas' Hamburg refinery will increase NSP production capacity by 40%.

Investment and Construction

The Linde Group has signed a long-term contract with Nynas AB for the on-site supply of hydrogen at Nynas’ refinery in Hamburg, Germany. As part of this agreement, Linde Engineering Division will construct a state-of-the-art steam methane reformer plant, with a total investment of around EUR 30 million.

Project Timeline

The new hydrogen facility is scheduled to go on-stream in the fourth quarter of 2015. This project is a significant part of the major restructuring of the Hamburg-Harburg refinery, which will be converted into a specialized naphthenic specialty oils (NSP) production site over the next two years.

Production Capacity

Once operational, the facility will have a capacity of 400,000 m³ of hydrogen per day. This will not only meet the hydrogen needs of Nynas' refinery but also supply other hydrogen customers in the Hamburg harbor area.

NSP Production Increase

By converting the Hamburg-Harburg refinery into a specialized NSP production site, Nynas aims to increase its overall NSP production capacity by forty percent. These specialty oils are used in various applications, including tires, transformers, printing inks, industrial rubber, and lubricants.
