Investment and Capacity
OMV has announced a final investment decision to build an innovative sorting plant in Walldürn, Germany, developed by Interzero. The facility will have a capacity of up to 260,000 tonnes per year and will process mixed plastics into feedstock for OMV’s chemical recycling. OMV will invest over EUR 170 million in this project.
Timeline and Employment
The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for November 20, 2023, with production expected to start in 2026. The new plant will create around 120 jobs at the site.
Technology and Process
The sorting facility will be the first of its kind to produce feedstock for OMV’s chemical recycling on a large industrial scale. The ReOil® technology, developed and patented by OMV, converts plastic waste that cannot be mechanically recycled into pyrolysis oil. The input for the sorting plant involves mixed plastics, especially those collected separately from the yellow bag and the yellow bin recycling system in Germany.
Partnership and Goals
OMV will hold 89.9 percent of the shares in the joint venture, while Interzero will hold 10.1 percent. The cooperation aims to ensure the supply of sustainable and high-quality feedstock for OMV’s chemical recycling, helping to close the loop for plastics. The sorting process has already been tested on an industrial scale and successfully processed as feedstock in OMV’s ReOil® pilot plant.
Future Developments
A new ReOil® plant with a capacity of 16,000 tonnes per year is currently under construction at OMV’s Schwechat site in Austria. The next step is the development of an industrial-scale ReOil® plant with a planned capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year.
