Project Overview
OMV and ALBA Recycling are in exclusive discussions to build and operate an innovative sorting plant in Walldürn, Germany. The plant will focus on further sorting mixed plastic waste for chemical recycling, with a final investment decision expected in 2022.
ALBA Recycling's Role
ALBA Recycling, which operates five sorting plants in Germany, currently sorts about one third of Germany’s lightweight packaging waste, totaling over 800,000 tons per year. The new plant will leverage ALBA's expertise to process over 200,000 tons of post-consumer mixed waste annually into suitable feedstock for producing virgin polyolefins.
OMV's ReOil® Technology
OMV has been a pioneer in chemical recycling technology, with its ReOil® pilot plant in Austria converting 100 kg of used plastics into 100 liters of synthetic feedstock per hour. The pilot plant has operated for 14,500 hours since 2018, leading to improvements in the thermal cracking process. OMV plans to scale up to a demo plant with a 16,000-ton annual capacity by 2023, aiming for a commercial-scale plant by 2026.
Environmental Impact
The collaboration aims to enhance the circular economy by reducing the environmental impact of plastic waste. The innovative sorting process will extract polyolefins from waste that currently requires incineration, turning it into valuable feedstock for sustainable production.
