Investment Announcement

LyondellBasell and KIRKBI have signed an agreement to invest approximately 130 million Euros in APK, a company specializing in solvent-based recycling technology for low density polyethylene (LDPE). This investment will make LyondellBasell and KIRKBI minority shareholders in APK, alongside other co-investors.

Recycling Technology

APK has developed the Newcycling® process, a unique solvent-based technology that separates different polymers in multi-layer packaging materials. This process produces recycled materials with a high degree of purity, suitable for new packaging applications. The technology aims to increase the recycling of multi-layer flexible packaging, which constitutes a significant portion of mixed plastic waste from the consumer sector.

Future Plans

The investment will support the construction of additional Newcycling® plants to expand production capacity. This advancement is expected to help meet the growing demand for high-quality recycled products and support the goal of a circular economy.

Statements from Stakeholders

Yvonne van der Laan, Executive Vice President of Circular and Low Carbon Solutions at LyondellBasell, emphasized the importance of advancing recycling technologies to reintroduce more plastic packaging waste into the value chain. Damir Hamzic, Head of the Circular Plastics Investment area at KIRKBI, highlighted the potential of APK's scalable technology to increase plastic circularity and reduce waste. Susanne Küppers, Member of the Executive Board of APK AG, expressed pride in having LyondellBasell and KIRKBI as strong supporters, bringing additional expertise in polymer design and application.
