  • Hosokawa Alpine's MDO technology will enhance film recyclability.

Investment in Recyclable Packaging Technology

INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe has announced a multi-million Euro investment in advanced technology aimed at developing recyclable flexible packaging films. This initiative is expected to prevent around one million tonnes of waste from being sent to landfill each year.

Advanced MDO Technology

The company will utilize new multilayer, blown line technology with Machine Direction Orientation (MDO) to create polyethylene and polypropylene-based flexible packaging films. This technology will reduce the number of polymers used, thereby increasing the recyclability of the packaging.

Installation and Development

The new MDO-multilayer line, sourced from Hosokawa Alpine, will be installed in INEOS’ R&D labs in Brussels, Belgium, in 2023. This equipment heats and stretches polymer films to improve their physical and barrier properties, making them suitable for various product applications.

Collaboration and Future Goals

INEOS plans to leverage this new capability and its expertise in resin design to collaborate with converters, brands, and retailers. The goal is to develop new generations of mono-material flexible film packaging products that are easier to recycle.
