- Evonik invests €25 million in Wesseling plant upgrade.
- The plant produces methylmercapto-propionaldehyde (MMP) for MetAMINO®.
- New process eliminates storage of intermediates like acrolein.
- Supports methionine production hub in Antwerp, Belgium.
Investment and Purpose
Evonik has invested €25 million to upgrade and expand its methylmercapto-propionaldehyde (MMP) production plant in Wesseling, Germany. This investment aims to strengthen its global methionine production network.
Production and Usage
MMP is a key component in the production of MetAMINO® (DL-methionine), which is used in animal feed to enhance livestock performance. The Wesseling plant has been producing these precursors for over 50 years.
Technological Advancements
The upgrade includes a new production process that eliminates the need to store chemical intermediates like acrolein on-site, thereby increasing efficiency and safety.
Strategic Importance
This development supports the long-term supply of MMP to Evonik's MetAMINO® production hub in Antwerp, Belgium, and is part of a broader strategy to maintain reliable and cost-efficient methionine production across global hubs in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
