Investment in Recycling Capacity

Borealis and Ecoplast have completed a strategic investment at their plastics recycling facility in Wildon, Styria, Austria. This investment includes the addition of an ultramodern polyethylene (PE) film recycling line, significantly boosting the plant's production capacity and improving operational efficiency.

Acquisition Background

In August 2018, Borealis acquired Ecoplast Kunststoffrecycling GmbH, along with mtm plastics GmbH and mtm compact GmbH, major producers of post-consumer polyolefin recyclates in Germany. The investment in the Wildon facility was planned prior to this acquisition.

Market Demand and Capacity Increase

The new investment responds to rising market demand for recycled materials, facilitating a 60% increase in production capacity. This expansion meets the need for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) recyclate, a preferred raw material for film packaging, while maintaining high quality standards.

Advanced Recycling Technology

The new mechanical recycling system at Ecoplast employs a fully automatic process for preparing and comminuting plastic wastes. It features optimized washing technology and improved near-infrared (NIR) sorting steps, which enhance the homogeneity of the recycled materials, reduce waste, and increase yield.

Enhanced Recycling Capabilities

Ecoplast specializes in recycling flexible materials from highly contaminated household and commercial refuse into products suitable for thin-walled film packaging. The new plant enhances both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of their recycling capabilities, benefiting customers with increased capacity and consistent quality.
