- £6.5 million investment in a new recycling line at Wilton plant in Redcar
- New rHDPE line will double output from 10,000 to 20,000 tonnes per year

- More UK scrap plastic processed domestically
Investment and Expansion
Biffa Polymers has announced a £6.5 million investment into a new recycling line at its Wilton plant in Redcar. This new line will focus on recycled High Density Polyethylene (rHDPE), which is used to produce food-grade materials like milk bottles and food trays.
Increased Output
The addition of the second rHDPE line will enable Biffa Polymers to double its output from 10,000 tonnes per year to 20,000 tonnes. This expansion is expected to be operational from early 2017, providing much-needed capacity in the plastics recycling industry, which is currently facing instability.
Domestic Processing
The new infrastructure will allow more scrap plastic generated by UK households to be processed domestically, reducing the need to send waste abroad for recycling. This move is aimed at meeting the growing demand for recycled plastics within the UK market.
Industry Context
Chris Hanlon, commercial director at Biffa Polymers, highlighted the importance of this investment in addressing market demand and stabilizing the recycling industry. The new line will help reintroduce capacity into the market, which is crucial given recent challenges in the plastics recycling sector.
