Introduction

Commercial-scale production of the high-purity renewable platform chemical, 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), has commenced at the Biochem-1 facility in Muttenz, Switzerland. The facility is operated by AVA Biochem and will produce up to 20 tonnes of 5-HMF per year in its first phase.

Production Process

The Swiss-made 5-HMF is derived from renewable feedstock using a modified version of the hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) process. This innovative production method allows for various levels of purity, reaching up to 99.9%. Commercial-scale quantities are now available for delivery.

Applications

5-HMF is a versatile platform chemical used in the development of new materials and products across multiple sectors, including chemicals, plastics, food, and pharmaceuticals. It is particularly valuable in the production of polymers, resins, and additives.

Recognition

In 2010, the United States Department of Energy identified 5-HMF as one of the top 10 most valuable platform chemicals. This recognition underscores its importance in the research and development of innovative materials.
