BASF Expands Methanesulfonic Acid Production in Ludwigshafen

At a glance
  • The plant extension took nearly two years to complete.
  • The new facility has a capacity of 30,000 tonnes per year.
  • 12 additional jobs were created in Ludwigshafen.
  • A new methanesulfonic acid plant is planned in Malaysia with PETRONAS.

Plant Extension and Capacity Increase

After nearly two years of construction, the plant extension in Ludwigshafen has started production, increasing the capacity for methanesulfonic acid to 30,000 tonnes per year. This expansion has also created 12 additional jobs in the region.

Environmental and Efficiency Benefits

Lutropur® is a biodegradable acid that allows for more efficient chemical processes, often operating at lower temperatures, thus saving energy and resources. It is a strong organic acid that is colorless, odor-free, and easy to handle, with high solubility and low corrosion, making it a high-performance alternative in phosphate-free cleaner formulations.

Future Expansion Plans

BASF is planning further expansions to meet growing global demand, with the next step being the construction of a new methanesulfonic acid plant in Malaysia. This project is a joint venture with PETRONAS, with BASF holding a 60% stake and PETRONAS 40%. The new facility will be part of the RAPID complex in Pengerang, Johor.

Applications and Manufacturing Process

Methanesulfonic acid, produced through a patented continuous process that ensures high purity without using chlorine, is used in various applications. These include industrial and household cleaners, electroplating baths for printed circuit boards and tin plate, and as a feedstock and catalyst in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
