Investment and Construction
LANXESS AG is investing EUR 18 million to build a new formalin production facility at its Krefeld-Uerdingen site. This facility will reduce the company's dependency on external feedstock for producing trimethylolpropane (TMP), a trivalent alcohol used in various industries such as furniture, construction, and automotive. Construction is set to begin in the third quarter of this year, with commissioning expected by the end of 2011.
Facility Details
The new plant will include formalin and methanol tanks, covering an area of approximately 1,000 square meters. This development will create five additional jobs at the Krefeld-Uerdingen site. The investment aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce transport costs, providing significant cost benefits.
Expansion Projects
In addition to the new formalin facility, LANXESS's Basic Chemicals business unit announced the completion of an expansion project at the Leverkusen site. This project, costing around EUR 35 million, will increase the production capacities of key basic chemicals such as cresols, Vulkanox BHT, Vulkanox BKF, and monochlorobenzene by up to 60 percent.
Future Investments
LANXESS continues to support its German production facilities, citing well-trained employees, excellent infrastructure, and access to technical and scientific innovation as competitive advantages. Recently, the company began constructing a new plant for membrane technology in Bitterfeld, costing EUR 30 million. Overall, LANXESS plans to invest approximately EUR 150 million in its German sites this year.
Global Operations
The Basic Chemicals business unit, part of the Advanced Intermediates segment, operates production sites in Germany, China, India, and the United States. The unit achieved sales of EUR 827 million in the first nine months of 2009 and employs over 1,400 people globally, with around 1,000 based in Germany.
