- Production capacity at Würzburg increased by 30%.
- Waterborne basecoats reduce solvent emissions, lowering environmental impact.
Investment and Expansion
BASF Coatings has officially launched new production and lab capacities for basecoats at its Würzburg site, following an investment of around 21 million euros. This expansion comes approximately one and a half years after construction began.
Increased Capacity
The expansion includes state-of-the-art dispersion and dosing techniques, as well as a newly constructed lab building for basecoat development. Overall, the production capacity at the Würzburg site has been increased by around 30%.
Environmental Impact
Waterborne basecoats, developed in Würzburg during the mid-1980s, replace the majority of organic solvents with water, significantly reducing solvent emissions and environmental impact. The use of waterborne paint systems has risen from 20% in 1997 to approximately 50% today.
Global Standards and Market Demand
Würzburg remains a key competence center for BASF's waterborne basecoat technology, which continues to set global standards in product properties and ecological quality. The automotive industry's demand for these eco-friendly basecoats, especially for coating plastic add-on parts, is growing in Europe and Asia.
