Expansion Plans
W. R. Grace & Co. announced plans to expand its manufacturing capacity at the Worms, Germany facility. The expansion aims to increase production of polypropylene catalysts, marketed under the trade name POLYTRAK(R). Construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2010, with completion and startup expected in 2011. The expansion will utilize available land already owned by the company and benefit from nearby technical resources and infrastructure.
Polypropylene Applications
Polypropylene is a versatile olefin polymer that can replace materials such as wood, metal, and glass. It is used in a variety of everyday products, including snack food packaging, artificial athletic surfaces, car bumpers, household appliances, and syringes.
Facility and Workforce
The Worms site employs approximately 900 people. The facility produces catalysts, additives, and silica-based materials used in various sectors, including refining, industrial, consumer, food and beverage, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals.
Certifications
In 2008, the Worms facility was certified to ISO 14001, an internationally recognized standard for environmental management systems. The following year, the site achieved certification to the Grace Environment, Health and Safety Management System, which covers environmental management as well as health, safety, security, product stewardship, and transportation.
