Farmers in Oltenia can earn extra income by supplying straw to a new plant converting it into cellulosic ethanol, creating jobs and supporting EU sustainability goals.

The plant will convert 250,000 tons of local straw into 50,000 tons of cellulosic ethanol annually, creating 300 jobs and using renewable energy to be carbon-neutral.

The acquisition of Oltchim SA's assets in Ramnicu Valcea, worth 589.3 million lei plus VAT, was fully paid, finalizing the ownership transfer on December 8, 2018.

The new plant will produce 50,000 tons of cellulosic ethanol annually using sunliquid® technology, starting in 2020. It will source local feedstock and aims for carbon-neutral biofuel production.

The modernization ensures compliance with 2016 environmental regulations, boosts productivity, and supports Romanian agriculture with improved fertilizer production and a new industrial water treatment station.

The plant, licensed by BASF, produces 22,000 metric tons of Phthalic anhydride and 700 metric tons of Maleic anhydride annually, selling mainly to Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Ukraine.
