- Vega stopped crude oil processing in 2004, focusing on bitumen, hexane, and solvents.

- Vega is Romania's sole bitumen producer, meeting 20% of domestic demand.
- Vega's hexane production supports both Romanian and EU industries.
Historical Overview
The Vega Ploieşti Refinery, established in 1905, is Romania's longest-running refinery. Initially processing crude oil, it transitioned to niche production over the last two decades, focusing on hexane, solvents, bitumen, and heating fuel.
Industry Context
During the interbellum period, Romania had 46 refineries, but by 1990, only 10 remained. In the last 35 years, 60% of Romania's refineries have closed, mirroring a broader European trend with around 30 closures between 1995 and 2025.
Modernization and Production
Rompetrol acquired Vega in 1999, ceasing crude oil processing in 2004 and shifting to semi-finished products from Petromidia. Under KMG International Group since 2007, Vega has modernized and increased production, peaking in 2018 with 406,000 tons processed.
Current Capabilities
Vega is Romania's only bitumen producer, supplying 20% of domestic demand, and produces polymer-modified bitumen. It is also a major hexane producer, meeting national needs and exporting to the EU, with applications in petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.
