Project Overview

The National Company Nuclearelectrica SA and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) have commenced work on Europe's first tritium removal facility at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant in Romania. This project represents a significant advancement in nuclear technology and environmental protection, aligning with the European Union’s sustainability objectives.

Technological Innovation

The facility will utilize innovative Romanian technology developed by the National Research and Development Institute for Cryogenic and Isotope Technologies – ICSI Rm. Vâlcea. The Cernavoda Detritiation Facility (CTRF) will be the third largest of its kind globally and the first in Europe. This positions Romania as a potential European hub for tritium production and export, a key fuel for future fusion reactors.

Environmental and Economic Impact

The tritium removal process will enhance environmental protection, fully aligning with Nuclearelectrica’s and Europe’s ESG objectives. The project also offers Romania the opportunity to develop its supply chain and become a center for the development and export of Romanian technology and expertise, leveraging local plants and workforce.

Safety and Compliance

The CTRF project adheres to the most advanced nuclear safety requirements for industrial tritium removal facilities, as set by the Romanian National Commission for the Control of Nuclear Activities (CNCAN). This ensures the safe and reliable operation of the facility.

Inauguration Ceremony

The inauguration ceremony took place at the Cernavoda NPP site, with participation from Nuclearelectrica, KHNP, and collaborators from ICSI Rm. Vâlcea. This event marks the official start of the project, highlighting the collaborative efforts between Romanian and South Korean nuclear industries.
