Acquisition Details
International Chemical Investors Group (ICIG) has signed an agreement to purchase Clariant's decommissioned bioethanol plant in Podari, Romania. The site will be operated by ICIG’s biotechnology subsidiary, Corden BioChem.
Expansion of Fermentation Capacities
Corden BioChem, which already runs one of Europe’s largest fermentation plants in Frankfurt-Höchst, Germany, will expand its aerobic fermentation capacity by approximately 1,500 m³ and add 10,000 m³ for anaerobic fermentations at the Podari site. The fermenters, ranging from 300 to 2,500 m³, will enable large-scale, cost-competitive fermentation services.
Investment and Reorganization
ICIG plans to invest in the high double-digit million range to reorganize the site into a flexible contract manufacturer for fermentation products, focusing on necessary downstream operations.
Operational Timeline
Corden BioChem aims to make the plant operational as soon as possible after the transaction closes, which is subject to customary local filing requirements. A significant proportion of the employees laid off by Clariant will be rehired.
