Collaboration for Sustainable Packaging

UPM Specialty Papers has teamed up with EvoPak to aid Walkers Chocolates in transitioning from plastic to recyclable paper-based packaging. This move aligns with Walkers Chocolates' sustainability goals and reduces plastic usage.

Innovative Packaging Solution

The collaboration combines UPM SolideTM Lucent 45 g/m² barrier base paper with EvoPak’s RCM coating, creating a fiber-based barrier solution suitable for chocolate and other demanding uses. The new packaging meets Walkers Chocolates’ standards for product quality, offering oxygen and grease barriers.

Implementation and Market Reach

Since 2024, Walkers Chocolates has provided recyclable paper packaging for its products, available in major UK retail chains and international markets. The packaging maintains the same efficiency and speed as previous plastic materials with minor adjustments.

Recyclability and Industry Impact

The packaging is recyclable in existing fiber recycling infrastructure, supporting the circular economy. It has achieved the CEPI/4EG Technical Recyclability Score (v. 2.0 Jan 2025). Samples are available at UPM Specialty Papers’ stand at Fachpack, Nuremberg, Germany.
