TotalEnergies strengthens methane-reduction ties with PETRONAS, SONANGOL and OIL
- TotalEnergies will help develop SEA METEC in Malaysia with PETRONAS, JOGMEC and JGC to evaluate methane measurement and monitoring technologies.
- It will share more than 10 years of operational experience from its TADI facility to support harmonisation of methane measurement and quantification methodologies.
- A Memorandum of Understanding with SONANGOL covers methane detection, measurement and reduction, flaring reduction, energy efficiency, facility electrification, carbon management, GHG reporting, training and potential World Bank GFMR Fund support.
- AUSEA drone campaigns in India included a first one-month survey over 20 Oil India sites in Assam and a second one-month campaign will extend coverage to additional sites to support emissions reporting.
Context
At the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter meeting in Abu Dhabi, TotalEnergies presented expanded cooperation with national oil companies in Malaysia, Angola and India to accelerate methane-emission reductions.
SEA METEC and TADI expertise
TotalEnergies signed a collaboration with PETRONAS, JOGMEC and JGC to contribute to the creation of SEA METEC, a regional methane-technology evaluation centre based in Malaysia. TotalEnergies will share the expertise gained over more than 10 years at its TADI facility to help evaluate technologies and harmonise measurement and quantification methodologies across Southeast Asia.
SONANGOL Memorandum of Understanding
The MoU with SONANGOL aims to strengthen technical cooperation on methane detection, measurement, monitoring and reduction and to address flaring, energy efficiency, facility electrification and carbon management. The cooperation also covers GHG reporting, technical training and exploration of financing options, including potential support from the World Bank’s GFMR Fund.
OIL field campaigns
Building on a first one-month AUSEA drone campaign that surveyed 20 Oil India-operated sites in Assam and supported emissions reporting, TotalEnergies and OIL will conduct a second one-month campaign to extend coverage to additional sites and further quantify emissions.
Commitment
The companies said sharing technologies and best practices will accelerate concrete action toward the stated ambition of near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.
