PETKIM selects Univation's UNIPOL PE Process for planned 850 kTA Aliağa polyethylene complex

Key highlights
  • Planned licensed polyethylene capacity of 850,000 metric tons per year (2×425 kTA swing reactor lines).
  • Site: Aliağa‑İzmir, Türkiye; first installation of the UNIPOL PE Process at the PETKIM site.
  • Selection of the UNIPOL PE Process announced ahead of PETKIM's final investment decision (FID).
  • Described as one of the largest polyethylene technology licenses awarded in Türkiye and intended to reduce reliance on imported polyolefins.

Project scope

PETKIM has selected Univation's UNIPOL PE Process Technology for a planned polyethylene production complex at Aliağa‑İzmir. The licensed project scope totals 850,000 metric tons per year delivered via two similarly designed 425 kTA reactor lines operating as "swing" lines. This would be the first UNIPOL PE installation at the PETKIM site and is described as one of the largest polyethylene technology licenses awarded in Türkiye.

Strategic rationale

Univation highlighted the strategic importance of expanding polyolefin production capacity in Türkiye to support domestic petrochemical growth and reduce dependence on imported polyolefins. The project is positioned to support PETKIM's long-term growth and expand domestic supply to meet evolving market needs. The technology selection is an important milestone preceding PETKIM's final investment decision (FID).

Supplier comment

Univation's president commented on the selection: "PETKIM's selection of the UNIPOL™ PE Process for this significant 850 kTA project reflects the proven performance and flexibility of our technology. By enabling a broad portfolio of high-performance polyethylene products across two reactor lines, this project would support PETKIM's long-term growth while expanding domestic supply to meet Türkiye's evolving market needs."
